Sclerotherapy
What it is

How does sclerotherapy work?

A fine needle injects sclerosant into the vessel, closing the walls of a small vein from within. The vessel stops filling with blood and gradually fades. Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy may be used for small tributary veins. Several sessions may be needed depending on the number of vessels.

How it works

The procedure, step by step

1

Assessment and plan

The doctor assesses the spider veins and estimates the number of sessions needed.

2

Injections

A sclerosant is injected into the vessels with a thin needle, almost painlessly.

3

Compression

Compression stockings are applied when needed to support the result.

4

Gradual fading

Within a few weeks, the vessels lighten and disappear.

Benefits of the method

  • Treats spider veins and thread veins
  • Without punctures, incisions and anaesthesia
  • Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy for small tributary veins
  • Outpatient treatment with little recovery time
  • Noticeable aesthetic result

When it is used

  • Spider veins and thread veins on the legs
  • Small varicose tributary veins
  • Aesthetic discomfort from the appearance of the legs
  • Addition to laser or RFA after the main treatment

Whether the method is right for you is determined by the doctor after examination and ultrasound.

Expert ultrasound guidance

Foam sclerotherapy is performed using a General Electric Logiq E ultrasound system, allowing the clinician to see the vessel and distribute the sclerosant precisely.

Questions about sclerotherapy

How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the number and size of the vessels. One session may be enough, but several spaced sessions are often needed. The doctor will estimate this after examination.
Does it hurt?
The needle is very thin, so the sensation is minimal, just a slight tingling sensation. Anaesthesia is not required.
When is the result visible?
The vessels lighten and disappear gradually, within a few weeks after the session. The final effect is evaluated later.
Is it possible in the summer?
You can, but after the procedure it is important to limit tanning of the treated areas to avoid pigmentation. The doctor will give individual recommendations.
