Why spider veins appear
Spider veins (telangiectasias) are enlarged small vessels in the surface layers of the skin. Factors include inherited vessel-wall weakness, hormonal changes, prolonged standing or sitting, and pregnancy. They are usually harmless, but an ultrasound scan can identify reflux in a larger underlying vein when suspected.
Symptoms
How do they look?
Red thread veins
Thin reddish lines resembling a spider web.
Blue spider veins
Bluish branched vessels on the thighs and lower legs.
Spread
The number and extent of spider veins may increase over time.
Discomfort
Occasionally, mild burning or itching around the spider veins.
Why should you see a doctor?
Before treating spider veins, it is important to check that the deeper veins are healthy. If reflux is present, it is treated first; otherwise the surface veins may return. Assessment may therefore include ultrasound.
Treatment
How we treat spider veins
The main treatment is sclerotherapy: a fine needle delivers a solution that closes the vessel, which then fades. It is an outpatient procedure with little or no recovery time.
All methods
If varicose veins are behind the spider veins, other methods are needed.

Questions about spider veins
Are spider veins dangerous?
They are usually cosmetic, but can sometimes indicate reflux in deeper veins. An ultrasound scan can rule out underlying varicose veins when appropriate.
Can spider veins be removed permanently?
Treated vessels fade, but the tendency to develop new spider veins may remain. Maintenance sessions may be recommended if new vessels appear over time.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the number of vessels. Several spaced sessions are often needed; the doctor will give you an estimate after examining your legs.
